The demand picture is genuinely good: the global RF test equipment market was valued at roughly $4 billion in 2024 and is on a trajectory toward $5.5–$6 billion by 2030, propelled by 5G infrastructure buildout, defense and aerospace spending, automotive radar and V2X validation, and the relentless proliferation of IoT-connected devices requiring RF compliance certification.1 The complication is that the tailwinds are, in several respects, also the headwinds: the same technological evolution driving demand is simultaneously obsoleting the installed base and concentrating purchasing leverage in the hands of a few very large platform vendors.

The software-defined question
The trend that operators in this space watch most carefully isn’t 5G or mmWave—it’s the migration toward software-defined instrumentation and modular platforms. Modular form factors are growing at roughly double the CAGR of benchtop, and the logic is straightforward: firmware updates can track new wireless standards (3GPP Release 17, 18, and beyond) without hardware replacement.3 For instrument manufacturers with proprietary hardware architectures, this is a genuine threat vector: the customer who used to buy a new box every three years may start buying a firmware license instead. Whether that transition also compresses margins or creates a more defensible recurring revenue model depends almost entirely on who owns the software stack—and the large platform vendors (Keysight, Rohde & Schwarz, Anritsu) are better positioned than independents to capture that value. The practical question for smaller manufacturers is whether there is a viable niche in highly specialized, application-specific instrumentation where software-defined generalism doesn’t yet reach—automotive radar, medical device RF certification, counter-UAS, quantum research environments—or whether the window on that strategy is closing.
