The testing and measurement instrumentation world (sensors, transducers, calibration-grade components, and the specialized hardware built to perform under heat, pressure, vibration, and other punishing conditions) presents a fascinating dichotomy. On the one hand, the structural demand picture is genuinely strong: the global T&M market is projected to grow from roughly $38 billion today to $65 billion by 2035,1 defense backlogs are swelling,2 and the buildout of semiconductor fabs, 5G infrastructure, energy systems, and other end markets keeps creating new applications for instruments that work where ordinary instruments don’t. But the day-to-day operating reality for the businesses that actually design and manufacture this equipment is more complicated.
What owners are navigating right now
Supply chains remain the stubborn headache. Precision instrumentation manufacturers often can’t easily substitute specialty inputs; a calibrated piezoelectric transducer or a hermetically sealed connector isn’t a commodity swap. More than half of manufacturers now cite tariffs and policy changes as their top operational challenge,3 which is notable given how much attention supply disruption and inflation had been getting. A few anecdotes along these lines:
- A manufacturer of pressure and temperature sensors for oil & gas wellheads spent most of 2024 qualifying domestic alternatives for two critical imported subcomponents, a process that took longer and cost more than anyone budgeted, and that required engineering involvement that pulled focus from product development.
- A small producer of ruggedized instrumentation for defense applications found itself caught between a reshoring mandate from a prime contractor and a domestic supply base that simply didn’t have capacity at the volumes and tolerances required. The solution, a hybrid sourcing arrangement with added inventory buffering, worked—but it permanently changed the working capital profile of the business.
- A calibration services firm serving semiconductor and aerospace customers found that its fastest-growing cost center in 2025 wasn’t labor or materials; it was compliance documentation, as customers ratcheted up traceability and sourcing disclosure requirements across their supplier base.
The AI question
AI is starting to mean something concrete in this industry, though not yet in the dramatic ways the trade press implies. The practical near-term applications seem to be in embedded diagnostics and predictive calibration instruments that can identify sensor degradation and calibration drift before measurement quality is compromised,4 shifting maintenance from reactive to anticipatory. That’s genuinely useful in applications where an out-of-spec reading carries real consequences or in locations where constant preventative maintenance is expensive. The bigger question is whether AI-enabled software layers will erode the standalone hardware value proposition over time, which seems like a big fat “it depends.” Most owner-operators sound like they’re watching it carefully without having formed strong views yet, which seems like the honest position.
What we’re watching
We’ve been spending time in this space because it sits at the intersection of several things we find interesting and attractive: technical complexity that creates durable differentiation, end markets (defense, energy, semiconductor, heavy industry) with long procurement cycles and sticky customer relationships, and an ownership demographic that skews toward founders and engineers who built something precise and are now thinking carefully about what comes next.
